From Prison to Freedom
I had been working with this client for several months.
When she started, she felt like a prisoner in her job of 22 years.
There was constant stress and her boss could be abusive.
Yet although she wanted to create her next chapter, she couldn’t imagine leaving work and the structure it gave her. “I thought I would shrivel up and die if I left,” she recalled.
But now this client was glowing. “I feel like I have a whole new perspective,” she said. “I can choose how I act and what I want to do.”
So what had changed?
Like many high performing professionals, this woman expected no less than the best—of herself and others—at all times.
And while there’s nothing wrong with high standards, living under the weight of constant self-criticism and judgment can destroy your confidence, not to mention your health.
(When I saw how much this woman was suffering, I asked if she wanted a referral to a therapist. She preferred to stay within our coaching process.)
Over time, my client learned to recognize the destructive thoughts she was having. She used the tools and resources I offered to help her go easier on herself and those around her.
She was able to change the voice—and the story—in her head.
It gives me freedom, she said. “It’s like a rebirth.”
Now she’s created her exit plan and started new activities that bring her meaning and joy.
What story are you telling yourself these days? Could it be holding you prisoner?
Whatever’s going on, a conversation with a helping professional can give you clarity.
