Vacation Tips if You're Over 50
What makes a great vacation?
An old boyfriend of mine believed it requires a dramatic change of scene. One summer we spent three weeks hiking and camping in the wilds of Sri Lanka. I still remember waking up in the middle of the night to see a tarantula crawling down the wall of our tent.
If you’re not feeling quite that adventurous this summer, here are three surefire suggestions for getting the most from your time off. Particularly if you are headed to the beach, or---in Philly-speak---“down the shore.”
Don't forget to play: If your first instinct is to plop down on the beach with a book, enjoy it, but remember to also find yourself some laugh-out-loud fun. There's nothing like play to refresh body and soul. So pick up a ball, splash in the pool, chase the waves or some butterflies. And don't forget mini golf. If you’re not traveling with children, go late in the evening and make a bet with your partner. That way your competitive types get their juices flowing, the mellow ones breeze along (and maybe win), and then you both enjoy the fun of negotiating the prize.
Boost your mood: In between naps, go for that book. But when you've finished your page-turner, try The Happiness Curve: Why Life Gets Better After 50, by Jonathan Rausch. Who can resist that title? And it’s based on solid research.
Get inspired: Listen to this audio recording of my recent FB Live talk Reinventing Retirement Beyond Finances. You'll hear stories about how people like you are discovering new possibilities. It goes really well with a cool drink and a snack. It might even change your view of where you are right now.
Full disclosure: the Sri Lanka trip was amazing, tarantulas notwithstanding. If you want to know more, call me!
You can also call me to talk about how to figure out your next chapter. I’m at 610-585-1945, or judith@judithkurnickcoaching.com. I may be playing at the beach when you try, but I promise to return the call within 48 hours!
