What Else is Dampening Your Holiday Spirit?

The situation in Washington pains us all. But are any of these also draining the joy from your holiday?

  • Your co-workers at the office party seem barely old enough to drink. You wonder if they are guessing your age.

  • Your divorce was years ago, but your adult child is still angry at you. You dread the inevitable blowup when he/she visits.

  • You hurt your back/hip/neck a few months ago and PT has not helped. You make it through the work day on pain meds and head home to bed. Will you ever feel like your old self again? Will you be able to keep working for five or 10 more years as you planned?

There are more general reasons why anger, sadness, and worry can stalk Boomers at this time of year:

  • The world isn’t turning out the way we wanted or expected.

  • Disturbing changes in how we look and feel are mounting.

  • Scariest of all, we’re in sighting range of an age we used to think of as “old.”

You can try to brush your feelings aside and “carry on,” as our English friends like to say.

But what if, instead of fighting the discomfort, you ask, “what is the information I am getting here? What is it telling me?

Where is the opportunity?”

In the wonderful film, It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Mister Rogers (Tom Hanks) teaches his young viewers, “There’s always something you can do with the mad you feel.”

The film movingly shows how a grownup who absorbs that lesson transforms his life for the better.

Because he discovers the opportunity.

No matter what is going on in your life, there are ways to make it more manageable. Often, that starts with gaining new perspective --- not just on your situation, but on yourself.

Just last week, one of my newer coaching clients, a successful attorney, told me how much the tools and insights she is receiving from our work together are already helping her make positive changes in her professional and personal life.
