3 Simple Ways to Feel Better Now
Are you overwhelmed or just fed up with all the bad news?
Since our brains are wired for survival, we naturally tend to focus on what scares us. It's the "fight or flight" instinct.
But for most of us, fighting or fleeing is not an option. So we get anxious and stressed.
So yes, try to meditate, exercise, any of those good things. But it's also important to feed your brain some positive information.
Here are 3 simple things you can do to feel better.
1. SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE
Watch this video. It’s 4 minutes long. Watch it to the end. It's worth it. And if you are 50 or over, share it with the younger folks in your life. It's good for all of us.
2. SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU WONDER
Can you imagine a structure built with easily found materials that could both feed and shelter people in need?
How about giant inflatable white spheres that can sense people around them breathing?
Or clothing and lamps made of seaweed?
These and a host of other fascinating concepts and projects were on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Designs for Different Futures exhibit. The show is headed to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Art Institute of Chicago and worth looking out for.
But while you’re waiting, visit TED.com, and browse their library of 3300 TED talks. Amazement awaits.
3. SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU BETTER
Do something for someone else. Today. Now.
Pay the coffee of the person behind you in line (easy) or the homeless person on the street (a little harder).
Check in on a friend or colleague who is having a health or family problem (more effort).
Or volunteer a few hours at a food pantry, animal shelter, or polling place.
It's simple: when you stretch beyond yourself to help another, it doesn't just do good, it feels good.
